Vitality

Still catching up with some emails here and Citizen Records (a.k.a. Vitalic) was nice enough to send along a mix he did along with a new one from Mondkopf. I have a listened to 'Flashmob' over and over now and it gets better every time. Here's one of my picks for a definite remix..

Enter The Club Cheval

Club Cheval is in a region of France that has always came won 1st in web hit statistics. Nord-Pad de Calais to be exact and the city of Lille sends us another email of mass proportions with these two. This one came flying out France a couple of weeks ago but has been heating up mixes from the likes of Douster, Myd and the Thermal Team to drop a few names. Off beats paired with punchy gabber hardcore bass slowed cooked to perfection. African or Portuguese vocals layered with the hooky synth and that baille break make for a techy dancefloor belter. 'Kapongo Dance' is even further down the world beat path with high zylo sounds and Major Lazer execution..

'In Fashion'

SomethingALaMode is Thomas Roussel and Yannick Grandjean who have been trying to enlighten folks in France for years now with their brand of classical inspired electronique. Culminating in 'Rondo Parisiano' feat none other than fashion demi god Karl Lagerfeld. The electro string duo gets remixed by fellow Frenchies Donovan for some much needed dancefloor deconstruction.

Also look out for Donovan's new ep slated for release on Oct 12 on Citizen records. It's called 'Chord' and will feature remixes of the song 'Yo!' by Blackstrobe, Dinamics, Acid Jacks, Mixhell..

It Ain't No Mystery

I just wanted to shamelessly plug the newest ep from Sound Pellegrino because its dope. Big up to L-Vis, Downtown, Gucci and Now go buy it!

There are times In the carreer of a top international DJ/Producer where things get a little bit out of control. Times when the glitter, the glam and the fame get a little out of hand. Times when the whole "travelling from the hotel to the jet, and from the jet to the 5000 capacity venue via a helicopter made of gold" - thing kinda blurs one's vision of day to day reality. In times like these, it's important for said DJ/Producer to take a step back, return to anonymity and focus on the music that keeps the underground clubs buzzing. The sweaty, dirty, forward-thinking, genre-defying, risk-taking house music that drives the cool kids crazy. That is exactly what the mysterious entity hiding behind GUCCI VUMP is doing with the release of Sha! Shtil!, The Boogieman and Casablanco on Sound Pellegrino.

If we wanted to tell you who Gucci Vump was, let's just say we get into some big fat legal trouble with legions of record company people, managers and agents and it would cause an unprecedented diplomatic incident. He is such an important and heavy money-generating figure in the international DJ scene that every piece of information regarding every single one of his release shakes the whole industry up. It's an amazing and exciting thing but we feel that such a media tsunami would turn Sound Pellegrino into a relentless money-making-attention-grabbing-hype-creating machine and ultimately cause more harm than good to the label. The humble little craftsmen of house music that we are much prefer to keep it on the down low. Therefore Gucci Vump's mysterious identity shall not be revealed.

Evidently there has been a lot of talk and speculation surrounding this release and the identity behind the alias "Gucci Vump". People have not quite nailed it yet and all the names that have been thrown around the internet in the last couple of months have all revealed themselves to be phoney. The mystery remains, and the buzz is growing, as gucci vump appears to be playlisted by more and more VIP DJs from around the globe, leaving people asking "who is this guy and what the hell is a Vump?". Mystery and controversy are one thing but when it comes to the music itself, Gucci Vump delivers.

Sha! Shtil! was inspired by a traditional Klezmer song telling the story of a Rabbi dancing like a madman to get rid of the demon in him. According to the general feedback we received, from tastemakers to regular weekend clubbers, the track is a smash hit capable of pleasing every dancefloor. People are just too happy to hear that lady sing in Yiddish, and the production is so crisp, it makes it the perfect tool for every dj to turn the techno party into RABBI-DOME VOLUME FIVE.

Totally in touch with the current interest in local scenes and the merging of fhe folkloric and the futuristic, gucci vump adds a political dimension to the "conceptual sample" game by using bits and pieces from both Jewish (as we heard with Sha! Shtil!) and Arabic traditional music on the same EP. The Boogieman could be the background for a fantasy Indiana Jones pursuit scene in a bazaar that ends up in an indian pit of snakes. And when he received Casablanco Orgasmic instantly described it as "Raï meets UK Funky". The comparison is a little bit "pulling it by the hair" as we say in French, but the tracks are two immense bangers.

On remix duties we have the man of the moment L-VIS 1990, known for his recent releases on Mad Decent and Dress2Sweat, building anticipation for his forthcoming Sound Pellegrino release Compass/Zahonda by providing a deadly yet classy take on "Sha, Shtil!" including one of the most venimous typhoon-shaped basslines heard in a while. Last but not least, Downtown, one half of star duo Renaissance Man, re-invents The Boogieman as a brilliant dubby tech house odyssey complete with sitar stabs and menacing howling noises, a guaranteed hit on deeper dancefloors.
Learn about our previous releases on our myspace blog!

So if you beginning letter in bold at the start of each new paragraph it spells out Tiesto. to be discussed ad infinitum I'm sure.

Always In Goodform

I dedicate this post to my friend Rob V who always seems to be operating at a higher frequency or wavelength than the rest of us. Whenever I see him rubbing his hands together a la' Mister Miyagi before a dj set I know were in for some scintillating disco. So this is my homage set in the spirit of winnipeg's Rob V. I have new and old on here (mostly old actually) but its a round set that would be perfect for luncheons, pre cocktails, or afterpartys..

First up is French producer Kelton Prima with some newer sounds of the classic 70's groove.

DL : Kelton Prima - Disco Megalo

No respectable set is complete without some Arthur Russell, here's one of his aliases.

DL : Felix - Tiger Stripes (Extended Version)

This spacey afro adventure will bust a funk safari on your ass with it poly rhythms.

DL : K.I.D. - Hupendi Muziki Wangu (you dont like my music)

This New Order sounding quirk house from James Curd is perfect breakdown material.

DL : James Curd - We Just Won't Stop (instrumental)

Manchester's Greg Wilson had a huge role in creating what we think of as electro.

DL : Greg Wilson - C'Mon You Can Get It

This just makes me gush like Tanlines so I love it. I realize its borderline trance from Lithuania.

DL : Downtown Party Network - Heart Break Dancing

FFFAIR GAME

I couldn't extract very much info on this new artist from France who goes by the handle FFFAIR. But what I can tell you is that this is some of the smoothest disco I've heard in 09 and can't wait to hear more form this new talent. Also working out the kinky disco vibe is Nat's who is from Moustache Collective..

DL : FFFAIR & Nat's - Will You Cccry

TO3CUTT3R

Bang Gang's latest release comes from the dirty dance sounds of the Toecutter. Judging by his name, you'll find the Toecutter to be quite different then most electronic artists. He's known for his mash-ups which are quite fucked up almost like a Girl Talk but x 10. The Best Party Ever is a bit more toned down than his earlier recordings and combines various elements of craziness, most of which are samples layered over dirty synths and hard ass drums. Lets see if anyone can guess the sampling.

'Sweet Rosie' From Sweden

Perfection. Is the only word that comes to mind when I hear 'Sweet Rosie' especially on the included 'Disco dub' edit of the song. Creepy vocals and 80's synth line with indie sensibility it seems that Turbo Recordings can do no wrong. With the Tiga (remixes), Noob and Brodinski (peanuts) and before that the Hugg and Pepp release they have a proper read on the world electro scene. Hugg and Pepp consists of the two cousins John and Jesper Dahlbäck, started out and released late in 2003 their first EP together called Bastratt EP. Glasgow's Sei A dubs the track into a spacey tech dance party and Jori Hulkkonen stops by to double edit the single for good measure..

DL : Hugg & Pepp - Sweet Rosie (Disco dub)

'Boycott' e.p. on Dirty Disco Tracks

New E.P. by France's Night Drugs called 'Boycott' on the burgeoning record label Dirty Disco Tracks which is run by you guessed it Phil Speiser, better known as Dirty Disco Youth. With this remix we have for you from California's Algeronics and Dirty Disco's own take on the song it makes for a tight new release for the upstart. This continues the hits for the label after having the Disco Villains EP rack up some very respectable beatport stats in the past few months..

DFA presents Still Going

Still Going is a Eric Duncan and Liv Spencer from New York. Much like the disco scene that sprouted from Studio 54 and other NYC clubs in the 70's this track has all the energy and verve that decade had for dance music. It was no surprise to me that their new EP 'Spaghetti Circus' would be released on DFA seeings how the label snatches up talent all over the globe they surely wouldn't overlook their own backyards..

DL : Still Going - Spaghetti Circus

I'm In Love With Dubstep (sorta)

It's been some time since Foamo has has dropped some heavy shit and this new remix of Dub Pistols is a quality example of where I want dubstep to go. I like the basic beat structure of dubstep but hate the un-danceability to the mainstream clubber. The hip hop beat breaks and tech step jungle influence leaves certain electro newbies gesticluating wildly like Elaine Benis at a wedding. In the case of this Foamo remix its a 100% integration of the two new styles. Reggae keys and big time echo showcase the dub alongside the face melting bassline but the key change here is the 4/4 house beat..

DL : Dub Pistols - I'm In Love (Foamo Dubstep remix)

DL : Dub Frequency - Guy Brutus (original mix)

New Noize

Double shot of Noize for you with these seminal reworks. First up a name that you know with Para One taking on 'Jeffer' and Toronto's bright up an comer John Roman. His sound is divergent from the bubbly pop of Mansion or Mstrkrft or in other words it Boys Noize. John Roman come to Winnipeg..

DL : Boys Noize - Jeffer (Para One remix) (rbr)
DL : Boys Noize - Kontact Me (John Roman remix) (rbr)

As Erol Alkan has already posted in his newsletter (join here) Boys Noize is expecting a rather special piano cover of ‘Waves’ by the one and only Chilly Gonzales.

Talking To Rob

I consider myself to be pretty hip to this whole electro game so it very disconcerting to me lose touch with one of my favorite labels from the past 18 months. Institubes has always had a business ethos based on punk rock foundations with minimalist french grooves. Keeping releases in the family of players (like so many labels now) with original and remixes being helped along by its partners. That's why it was no surprise to see them re animate the music of Rob.

In the sphere of Professional Sports being brought out of retirement will usually mean that you should have "burned out" rather than "faded away" to use Neil Young's interpretation. However, in the case of Rob and his Dodécalogue series he has come out of it with a bang. He made an amazing record called 'Don't Kill' in 00' and 'Satyred Love' in 02' then quickly dropped into the background withholding his magic from the world. Well no more.

DL : Rob - Talking To God from Dodécalogue Vol I

From Rob:.

I am glad to announce the opening of my Dodécalogue. Each month, for a year, I will release a new record dedicated to studying the Gospels and the apostles.
Join me for a deep, modern, musical and mystical exegesis. Free from classic liturgy, I am embarking upon a tender and chaotic and wandering journey into time immemorial.

In order to make this somewhat easy for you, Institubes and I thought you would like to subscribe to the series.

Welcome to you all.

Rampage Presented By The Hosers

If you have been to any shows in Winnipeg in the last year or so you've probably supported The Hosers. Having had a hand in some the biggest names to roll through Peg City they have pushed to bring us top notch music leaders without consideration for their own bottom lines. Tonight is no exception with Chicago's Ghetto Division crew member Rampage. I was introduced to Rampage via the Nightshifters Label some time ago alongside VR favorite Hostage.

All the details you need are on the poster. I also included a Rampage mix and a mix from the Hosers themselves to whet you appetites.

HighBloo '50cl' and 'Kid Conga' Remix

More brand new brilliance from our buddy HighBloo from Belgium with '50cl' and a remix of Daniel Haaksman's beautifully constructed afro tech house track 'Kid Conga'. Morphed vocals and squelchy bass sections all show off the new school with sounds similar to Afrojack or Renaissance Man. This up and comer seems to have his finger on the pulse of the beat right now cuz he can't miss and is keeping stride with some of the biggest names in the biz with his crisp beats..

Remix 'Maximus'

Just when ya thought I was gonna stiff ya for tunes along comes some Beni with the official remixes by Jori Hulkkonen and to describe it would put it down so I will be silent. Its Jori. Another producer that I feel is slated for stardom in 2009/2010 is definitely Harvard Bass. One of the turning points that guided the music (for me anyways) was 'Stitches' by Harvard Bass. That was back on my brothers birthday (May 16th) of 08' Now we're dancing to the sounds of 'Six Pack Anthem' and 'Caked' which continue to blow me away. I hope that in the future the next wave or style to come along should be nurtured to flower without fertilization from hype media, without pigeonholing or categorization. Call it Sound Pellegrino but don't label it tribaltechieafrohouse. I myself am guilty. I tend to overanalyse my reviews on this blog but its mostly for the DJ's out there..

DL : Beni - Maximus (Harvard Bass remix)
