'Black Diamonds' from Buraka
Its no wonder that Portugal's Buraka Son Sistema have already worked with Hot Chip. They have a such a tribal funky cultured approach to dance that is fresher than a mouthful of peppermint altoids. We have a fairly new mixtape courtesy of the kings of Kuduro

The long awaited debut album from Portugal’s finest export is here. ‘Black Diamond’ from Buraka Som Sistema gets its UK release on fabric records November 10. Since 2001 the Fabric label has carved out a reputation as one of the best compilation series the world over, and it seems only fitting they should begin releasing artist albums with the emphatic bang that is Buraka Som Sistema.
Despite having only one 12” release -‘Yah!’ - under their belt in the UK to date, the band’s unique sound has already made them favourites with critics and DJs alike. Championed by Diplo, M.I.A, Santogold and Switch, their electro ghettotech take on their favourite South West African music has been corrupting dancefloors all over the world.
Buraka Som Sistema - AKA Lil' John, Riot, Conductor and Kalaf – have created a progressive and totally new sound, fusing the wild beats of Angolan Kuduro music with 21st century electronics. Lil John and Riot began making music together in their teens, but the core of Buraka Som Sistema formed when the two began working with Angolan producer, Conductor, who brought along an extensive knowledge of Kuduro music to the table. Enter Kalaf, the articulate, stage stalking MC and the core of the equation was complete. The four draw influences from the music of their youth and culture, fusing it with the inspiration taken from music genres as diverse as techno, drum’n’bass, hip hop and dance music.
‘Black Diamond’s’ musical content spans the length and breadth of their collective influences with a distinctly political edge, referencing the inescapable corruption that goes hand in hand with the presence of diamonds and oil. A revolving cast of talents complete the album and their widely praised live show. Guest vocalists include M.I.A, Kano, Petty, Pongolove, Bruno M, Saborosa, Puto Prata, Deize Tirgrona and DJ Znobia. Buraka will be in the UK in October to take part in this years’ Africa Express showcase as part of the BBC Proms on 22 October. A London date for press will be scheduled around the time of this performance on Tuesday 21 October at Cargo.
In addition to this, the band have been nominated for an MTV Europe Award as Best Portuguese Act. They were finalists in the ‘New Sound of Europe’ category at the awards previously. A DJ tour of the UK will follow the album in November. Look out for the first single - ‘Sound of Kuduro’ feat. M.I.A - plus a full live tour in February 2009.
